VDOT News - Staunton

STAUNTON – (10:00 p.m.) Cold temperatures and lingering afternoon snow have left road conditions ranging from moderate to clear in the Shenandoah Valley.  Travelers will find ice and snow on some roads, particularly in the northern part of the Valley.  Black ice, spots of snow and ice remain on many roadways. Virginia Department of Transportation crews will treat and monitor roads throughout the night.

VDOT continues to advise travelers to use extreme caution when traveling throughout the Valley and the Commonwealth of Virginia due to varying road conditions.  All travelers should use seat belts.

Here are the road conditions as of 10 p.m. in the Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton District:

Interstate 64 – Minor conditions are in Alleghany and Augusta counties. Clear conditions are in Rockbridge County.

Interstate 66 – Minor conditions are in Warren County.

Interstate 81 – Moderate conditions are in Frederick County. Minor conditions are in Augusta and Shenandoah counties.  Clear conditions are in Rockbridge and Rockingham counties.

Primary roads – Moderate conditions are in Frederick, Warren and Clarke counties. Moderate to minor conditions are in Shenandoah County. Minor conditions are in Alleghany, Augusta, Rockingham and Page counties. Clear conditions are in Highland, Bath and Rockbridge counties. 

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions are in Alleghany, Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Warren, Clarke and Page counties. Minor conditions are in Highland and Bath counties.

Road condition definitions:

Severe – drifting or partially blocked road. 

Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway. 

Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
