VDOT News - Staunton

STAUNTON – (5:30 p.m.) The rain/snow line has left the Shenandoah Valley with snow cover on grassy areas north of Augusta County and from Augusta south roads continue to be wet.  The March 3 storm began in the region just after sunrise.

Motorists should be alert for both slush, ice patches and some freezing rain. Higher elevations will have more ice.  Bridges, overpasses, ramps and any area with air underneath will freeze first.  Motorists should continue to watch out for these areas. The entire Valley area may see some freezing conditions on roadways as the sun goes down. 

Virginia Department of Transportation crews are out and treating roads as needed.  Motorists are advised to drive with caution.  Always use seatbelts.

Here are the road conditions as of 5:30 p.m. in the Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton District:

Interstate 64 – Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

Interstate 66 – Clear conditions in Warren County

Interstate 81 – Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Frederick counties.

Primary roads – Minor conditions in Highland and Page counties and on Route 33 in Rockingham County.  Clear conditions in Bath, Alleghany, Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Warren and Clarke counties.

Secondary roads – Minor conditions in Highland, Rockingham and Page counties.  Clear conditions in Bath, Alleghany, Rockbridge, Augusta, Shenandoah, Frederick, Warren and Clarke counties.

Road condition definitions:

Severe – drifting or partially blocked road. 

Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway. 

Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
